“Realigning” History
Beck Design led the historic renovation of the city-owned vehicle maintenance garage, originally built in 1925 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Working within preservation requirements that prohibited major exterior changes, the design retained and celebrated the building’s original character, including exposed trusses highlighted by indirect lighting. A new west entrance improved accessibility, while the circulation desk was strategically located to oversee both entrances and enhance staff efficiency. Flexible planning allows community rooms and restrooms to operate independently after hours. A unique feature of the project transformed a former vehicle service pit into a children’s reading area, creating an engaging focal point that encourages literacy and library use among young visitors.
