USS Oklahoma Memorial at Pearl Harbor

Among the U.S. Pacific Fleet, the Battleship Oklahoma (BB-37) suffered the catastrophic loss of 429 sailors and Marines who gave their lives in service to the nation. For decades, these men had no dedicated Memorial recognizing their sacrifice.

Beck Design was deeply honored to design the USS Oklahoma Memorial, a place of remembrance that offers individual recognition for each of the fallen.

The design draws inspiration from the U.S. Navy tradition of “manning the rails,” in which sailors stand shoulder-to-shoulder along the deck of a ship as it returns to port. Translating this ritual into architecture, the memorial features 429 white granite standards, each seven feet tall and inscribed with the name and rank of those lost. Standing shoulder-width apart, the standards embody the sailors and Marines returning home together for the final time. A base of gray and black granite evokes the ship’s hull, grounding the installation in a powerful visual metaphor.

Visitors are invited to walk among the standards, experiencing a profound connection to each individual honored. The design fosters both personal reflection and collective remembrance, ensuring that the courage and sacrifice of the USS Oklahoma’s crew will never be forgotten.
