The Oklahoma Turnpike Authority selected a design team through competition to reimagine one of the state’s most iconic and recognizable landmarks—the Glass House, located above the Will Rogers Turnpike.
Originally built in 1957, the structure has served generations of travelers as a distinctive stop along the highway. Essentially a concrete bridge spanning the turnpike, the building is distinguished by its dramatic parabolic arch, a hallmark of mid-century modernist architecture. After decades of use and decline, the Turnpike Authority made the thoughtful decision to invest in restoring and revitalizing this important piece of Oklahoma’s cultural and architectural history.
The design challenge centered on preserving the building’s unique character while updating it with modern finishes, technologies, and amenities to meet the needs of today’s traveler. Central to the renovation was the replacement of outdated materials with expansive new glass that enhances both transparency and energy efficiency, while highlighting the arch’s timeless silhouette. Careful attention was given to maintain the landmark’s original spirit, ensuring that it remains instantly recognizable while also providing an improved user experience.
The Will Rogers Archway offers nearly 30,000 square feet of renewed facilities including new restaurants, convenience stores, and Oklahoma tourism exhibits. More than just a place to stop and refuel, the revitalized Glass House will once again stand as a cultural destination, showcasing the history and hospitality of Oklahoma. With this transformation, the Archway will continue to welcome weary travelers for decades to come while reinforcing its role as a true gateway along the turnpike.
